Overview

Embarking on a 7-day journey from Tangier to the Sahara Desert is to delve into the heart of Morocco, traversing historic cities, majestic mountains, and fertile valleys until reaching the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. This route is designed for those who wish to experience a complete, authentic, and profound journey through the country in just one week.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tangier – Tetouan – Chefchaouen

We depart from Tangier, the radiant white city overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, and journey towards Tetouan, the Andalusian gem famed for its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Our route then ascends into the Rif Mountains until we reach Chefchaouen, Morocco’s iconic Blue City. We wander through its enchanting alleys, visit the lively Uta el-Hammam Square, explore the Kasbah, and ascend to the viewpoint near the Spanish Mosque—an idyllic spot to witness the sunset over the azure rooftops. Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional riad.

Day 2: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fez

After breakfast, we set off for the renowned Roman ruins of Volubilis, an archaeological marvel surrounded by vast olive groves.

Next, we proceed to Meknes, an imperial city founded by Moulay Ismail, where we admire the magnificent Bab Mansour gate, the royal mausoleum, and the ancient city walls.

By afternoon, we arrive in Fez, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart, where we relax in a charming riad nestled within the medina.

Day 3: Discovering Fez, Morocco’s Oldest City

We dedicate the day to uncovering Fez el-Bali, the oldest and most intricate medina in the Islamic world. Guided by a knowledgeable local, we explore the Al Quaraouiyine University, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the leather tanneries, and the bustling souks where leather, metalwork, and textiles are crafted as they have been for centuries.

A traditional lunch follows, then free time to continue exploring this soulful city. Overnight at the same riad.

Day 4: Fez – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Leaving Fez, we traverse the Middle Atlas Mountains, pausing in Ifrane, known as the “Moroccan Switzerland,” and in the Azrou cedar forest, home to the Barbary macaques.

We continue through the spectacular Ziz Valley, a lush oasis dotted with palm groves and earthen villages, until we reach the desert town of Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Welcomed with traditional mint tea, dinner, and overnight accommodation in a hotel or riad overlooking the dunes.

Day 5: Merzouga – Culture and Adventure in the Desert

A full day devoted to exploring the Moroccan Sahara. We embark on a 4×4 excursion across the dunes, visit nomadic families, fossil mines, and the village of Khamlia, where we enjoy traditional Gnawa music.

In the afternoon, we set off on a camel caravan to the desert camp nestled within the heart of the dunes. A Berber feast, drumming, and a magical night beneath the stars in a luxurious tent await us.

Day 6: Merzouga – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

We awaken amidst the dunes and, after breakfast, return either by camel or 4×4. We head towards the Todra Gorges, where we stroll among towering cliffs rising up to 300 meters.

Thereafter, we journey to the Dades Valley, renowned for its striking rock formations and ancient kasbahs. We soak in the breathtaking scenery and rest in traditional accommodations with panoramic valley views.

Day 7: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

Our final day unveils cinematic landscapes. We visit Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” and tour the Taourirt Kasbah.

Next, we explore the imposing Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and filming location for epic productions like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones.

Crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), we arrive in Marrakech, concluding this unforgettable Moroccan journey.
