Itinerary: 6 days from Tangier to Merzouga

Day 1: Tangier – Chefchaouen

We began the journey in Tangier, the northern gateway to Morocco, with its Andalusian and European influences. After a brief panoramic visit to the port, the Medina, and Cape Spartel, we headed south towards Chefchaouen, the iconic blue city nestled in the Rif mountains.

There, we stroll through its blue-painted streets, Uta el-Hammam Square, the Kasbah, and the numerous viewpoints that offer unique panoramas. Dinner and accommodation in a charming riad.

Day 2: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fez

After breakfast, we headed to the archaeological site of Volubilis, an ancient Roman city where columns, mosaics, and temples are still preserved in excellent condition.

We continue towards Meknes, an imperial city founded by Moulay Ismail, where we visit the imposing Bab Mansour gate, the royal granaries, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

In the afternoon, we arrived in Fez, the spiritual capital of Morocco, where we spent the night in a traditional riad.

Day 3: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou Forest – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Early, we left Fez and crossed the Middle Atlas, passing through the alpine town of Ifrane, known for its pointed-roof houses and cleanliness.

Then we crossed the cedar forests of Azrou, where it is common to see Barbary macaques. We continued towards the Ziz Valley, with its impressive oases and kasbahs, until we reached the Merzouga desert in the afternoon, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Reception with mint tea and dinner at a typical accommodation by the desert.

Day 4: Merzouga – Desert Experience

This day is completely dedicated to discovering the Sahara. We visited nearby Berber villages, such as Khamlia, where we enjoyed live Gnawa music, and explored the area in a 4×4: fossil mines, nomadic camps, and lost oases.

At sunset, we rode dromedaries to cross the dunes and reach a Berber camp in the heart of the desert. Dinner under the starry sky and a night in comfortable tents.

Day 5: Merzouga – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

After sunrise and breakfast at the camp, we returned by dromedary or 4×4 to Merzouga and continued on our way.

We visited the spectacular Todra Gorges, rock canyons that reach up to 300 meters in height, ideal for walking and taking photographs.

We continue towards the Dades Valley, with its curious rock formations known as “monkey fingers” and its traditional kasbahs. Night in accommodation with views of the valley.

Day 6: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

On the last day of the trip, we headed towards Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert” and famous for its film studios. We make a stop at the Kasbah Taourirt and then continue towards the incredible Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-recognized Berber adobe fortress and the setting for movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Finally, we crossed the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) until we reached Marrakech, where our 6-day journey ends.
